Founder Shine Adams works in social service, employed at a homeless shelter. He often leads 12-Step meetings at the local county jail. Adams started his career in social work providing peer counseling during 12-Step meetings to others in recovery, and conceived of Sun Cedar when confronted by the pitiless reality facing a friend who was a reformed two-time felon. A criminal record, or homelessness severely limit the 'employability' of those most in need of basic employment.
Many of our employees are themselves in recovery, working hard at maintaining their sobriety, but encountering few conventional employment opportunities. Once Shine developed his production process, he realized he had an opportunity to create a company to manufacture the little trees that could further his larger goals, providing ethical employment opportunities to the disadvantaged people he counsels every day. Sun Cedar's founders, managers and employees are all clean and sober, and voluntarily participate in a drug and alcohol testing program. Providing a safe and sane workplace is the founding principle of Sun Cedar, our origin lies in this simple idea.
